Japanese Lacquerware, Urushi Sake Cup, Kousai-A

These Sake Cups are the traditional Japanese lacquerware handmade by experienced craftsmen. Main material of the cup is a high-tech material which consists of lacquer and wood chip. Different from ordinal lacquerware, the new material prevents deformation by drying, is hardly scratched, and is water resistant. Therefore, these lacquerware are durable enough for everyday use.

Experienced lacquer painters gave lacquer “Urushi” coating on a cup, followed by working to put traditional patterns by hands.
This cup pattern is made by a traditional lacquer art technique “Raden”, which is the inlaid mother-of-pearl work. Mother-of-pearl is cut in various shapes, followed by sticking on lacquer base.
