Character of Dainichi Buddha
Dainichi Buddha, called “Dainichi-Nyorai” in Japanese, is the central deity of Esoteric Buddhism. Dainichi (literally meaning the “Great Sun”) is worshipped as the supreme, primordial sun Buddha and appears as the central figure of the Five Wisdom Buddhas. Also, the Shinto sun goddess “Amaterasu” was considered a manifestation of Dainich-Nyorai. The term Nyorai means “thus-come one”.
Different from the other Nyorai statues who are expressed without ornaments, Dainichi-Nyorai (Dainichi Buddha) is expressed by glorious shape who puts on ornaments such as the jeweled crown and necklace. This is because Dainichi-Nyorai is the king of Nyorai and other Buddha. The gesture entailing the left-hand index finger being grasped with the right hand is called “Chiken-in mudra”, which is a characteristic expression of Dainichi-Nyorai and is symbolize the “knowledge fist” of the Diamond Realm.
